Theatre Maker
Roann’s award-winning debut solo show, My Father the Tantric Masseur, sold out runs at Soho Theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe. The piece won Vault Festival’s Outstanding New Work Award and toured nationally, including to Lawrence Batley and Theatre CCA Glasgow. Their follow-up, Who Murdered My Cat? also toured, sold out, and was longlisted for the Popcorn Award in collaboration with BBC Writers Room.
Roann has since gone on to become co-artistic director of Bet'nLev Theatre company, which uses their practice to co-create and develop their award-winning show, Remythed. Roann and Joel Samuels now teach this practice and style of storytelling to people up and down the country.
Roann loves to direct and dramaturg and make. Their style is collaborative, explorative and open. They embrace imperfection and aim for excellence. They will be a doula for your story. Whether it's collating, interrogating, excavating or structuring, they’ll support you in delivering your piece.
“I have worked with the ridiculously talented Roann Hassani McCloskey as a dramaturg, who has been able to add authenticity and provocation; speaking from direct experience on what it means to be a woman, to be queer, to be from an Arabic background, and generally helping ensure the sincerity of the script; keeps me honest and accountable.”— David Shopland, Writer
